Do's and Don'ts of Buying a Used Car | Greenville SC | Near Spartanburg, Anderson & throughout the Upstate

The Do's and Don'ts of Car Buying

Looking to buy your next vehicle, but not interested in investing in a new one? A used car can be a great choice. However, while buying used can save you a great deal of money upfront, it's important to be sure you know what you're getting into. Each car is used differently, and while we always suggest getting a vehicle's VIN number and checking its history, there are steps you can take to gain peace of mind when it comes to deciding on your next car.

1. Do Know Your Needs

Since there are such a variety of body styles to choose from with so many features and amenities available, it can be difficult sometimes to know where to begin in the used car buying process. But when you narrow down categories like how much cargo space, passenger seating or towing capacity you need, then you can start to figure out what vehicle is right for you.

2. Do Research

Once you've decided on the type of vehicle that you want, start a list of your deal breakers in a used vehicle. Research different models and makes that give you all the amenities and features that you want.

3. Do Know How Much You Can Afford

Making and sticking to a budget can be the most difficult part of this whole process. Even if you have a dream car in mind, sometimes finding one that you can afford can be a challenge. When buying a vehicle, it's recommended that you put about 20 percent down, limit the term to no more than 60 months and keep your monthly payment below 10 percent of your income. Plus, you'll want to make sure that you consider the cost of regular and unexpected maintenance. Some cars cost more than others.

4. Don't Trade In A Car That's Worth Less Than You Owe On It

Negative equity can be a burden that you don't necessarily have to face. The remainder of your previous loan may be consolidated into your new car's loan amount, meaning you could be paying the debt of two cars in one, giant loan. Get ahead by knowing in advance what your trade may be worth.

5. Don't Rush Your Test-Drive

Take your time with the test-drive to make sure you like the car and can get a sense of how it drives. Ask questions, play with the various features and look around inside and out of the vehicle. Make sure the car has enough space for everything you need.
