About Asheville, NC

Asheville is the largest city in Western North Carolina and serves as a cultural epicenter for the area. According to the 2010 national census, Asheville is home to more than 83,000 residents and is the county seat for Buncombe County. Due to its central location, the city is also the hub of the four-county Asheville metro area, which encompasses more than 400,000 residents. Good Morning America named Asheville one of the "10 Most Beautiful Places in America" in 2011, and the town has similarly earned accolades from various publications, including: Self (which cited Asheville as America's "Happiest City"), Modern Maturity (which named it one of "The 50 Most Alive Places to Be") and Rolling Stone (which proclaimed it "America's New Freak Capital," citing its active New Age community). Asheville is also home to the U.S. National Climatic Data Center, the largest active archive of weather data in the world, and the city plays host to several breweries, as well. Live music is another defining characteristic of the city's culture, which has a long history of street performances, outdoor music, festivals, nightclubs and venues.

Asheville is also celebrated for its prominent Art Deco style architecture, which can be seen throughout the downtown area. The city saw a significant amount of growth throughout the early twentieth century, which allowed it to take out bonds for construction. At the time of the Great Depression, the city's bonded debt was so large ($56 million, the highest per capita debt of any contemporary city in the country and equivalent to more than $700 million today) that it strained new development for the next fifty years until those debts could be paid. Consequently, structures built during the earlier boom, which might have been renovated or razed for new development, remained unaltered.
